The Dow Chemical Co.’s early successes with transparent polystyrene led its design engineers to develop both Ziploc plastic storage bags and Saran Wrap. In 1968, Dow Chemical licensed the technology to produce resealable plastic bags and, later that year, began test-marketing Ziploc bags in select parts of the country.

By 1978, Ziploc bags were being sold to consumers across the United States.

The success of the Ziploc bag eventually led to the development of plastic storage bags designed especially for sandwiches, the freezer and other everyday uses.

The Ziploc brand is now manufactured by SC Johnson.
