A lawyer and teacher in Greece, Andre V. Pierros taught children in Arlington Heights and Mt. Prospect classical Greek as well as the customs and cultures of his homeland. “He rented space in different schools,” said his son, William. “He really loved the kids and teaching.” Since retiring from teaching in the early 1990s, Mr. Pierros worked as a manager at the Manor Restaurant in Elgin. Mr. Pierros, 67, died of cardiac arrest Thursday, Jan. 8, in the University of Chicago Hospitals, Chicago. He received a teacher’s degree from a college in northern Greece, then moved to Athens, where he taught in a private elementary school, working his way through the University of Athens law school. He served for four years as a captain in the Greek air force. After graduating from law school, he became involved in politics, writing and delivering speeches. He met his wife, Betty, an American of Greek descent, while she was vacationing in Greece, and they got married in 1965. Mr. Pierros moved to the United States in 1967, settling in Elgin and teaching while maintaining a law office with a partner in Athens. He retired from the job as restaurant manager after the death of his wife in late 2002. “But he would still hang out there a lot,” said his son. “He loved making people feel welcome, well-fed and happy.” Mr. Pierros was a founding member of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in Elgin. He is also survived by a daughter, Andrea; and three sisters, Eleni Caoulas, Maria Diosinis and Yianoula Styliaras. A private service was planned for Tuesday.
