Mary Marubio, 77, an activist in her community and a former president of the Hollywood North Park Community Association, died of renal failure Friday, Jan. 9, in Resurrection Medical Center. A lifelong Chicago resident, she graduated from Lake View High School and frequented downtown hotels to ballroom dance, said her daughter Sandra. When overflow parking from Northeastern Illinois University kept her from parking in front of her home in the late 1960s, she met with the alderman and university officials and finally marched into Mayor Richard J. Daley’s office along with several neighborhood women and demanded zone parking, said her son, Howard. The women became active in the Hollywood North Park Community Association and lobbied for the creation of Peterson Park, he said. Mrs. Marubio served as president of the association and also sat on the board of the North River Commission. “She was a very polite political activist that could get things done within an old-boy network,” said her son. She also was active in St. Hilary Church, said her daughter. Other survivors include her husband, Howard; another daughter, Alison Ayres; and five grandchildren. Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Hilary Catholic Church, 5600 N. Fairfield Ave., Chicago.
