“The Apprentice,” NBC’s new unscripted series about Donald Trump’s search for a new apprentice, scored impressive ratings in its premiere Thursday, although total viewership declined during the 90-minute episode.

The series drew more than 21 million viewers at 7:30 p.m. but had dropped to 17.9 viewers by 8:30 p.m. The loss was more glaring since more than 22.5 million viewers returned at 9 p.m. for “ER.” NBC was pleased with the ratings, pointing out that “The Apprentice” scored the highest rating in the ages 18-49 demographic for a new network series in more than a year.

The series moves into its regular 7 p.m. Wednesday time slot this week.
