Robert Hughes’ column “Road kings and the natural law of left lane occupancy” (Commentary, Jan. 6) speaks in first-hand detail about why the new Left Lane Law was enacted: to control the ignorant and careless behavior of drivers who, like Hughes, seem to see no problem in clogging the left lane.

The law is simple: Use the left lane for passing only, period. But some adults just don’t get it.

The Autobahn in Germany is a beautiful example of the left lane concept at its best. It allows for a more smooth and efficient driving experience.

I am very pleased to see our Illinois legislators enact this law.
