Elisabeth Flaherty isn’t the leading scorer on Regina’s girls basketball team–she’s not even a starter. But she is, according to coach Jim Russo, the Panthers’ leading leaper. Flaherty believes her training in Irish dance has given her a huge, um, lift. “Definitely, there’s a connection,” said the 5-10 junior forward, who began playing basketball and taking dance lessons in third grade. “There’s a real emphasis on getting off the ground in Irish dancing.” This past Thanksgiving, she performed with a team from the Mullane Irish Dance Academy at Oireachtas, the Regional Irish Dance Championship in Columbus, Ohio. “She brings a lot of positives to practice,” Russo said. “It’s impossible not to like her.”
