I am 56 years old, and before it’s my time to go six feet under, I really hope the Cubs play in at least one World Series. Now to the bottom line, before it’s too late: The Cubs should immediately sign Greg Maddux as a player/coach. Why?
– As a starting pitcher, he is sure to win at least 10 games (15 is more like it) this year for the Cubs if he stays healthy.
– As a coach, he can relate and teach more to the Cubs’ pitching staff in one week than Larry Rothschild can in an entire season.
– Reassign Rothschild to the minor-league system and use the savings and insight gained from Maddux to help sign Pudge Rodriguez.
The signing of Maddux and Rodriguez would send Cubs fans all over the world into a frenzy. And what could it do for Tribune Co.? Well, if those additions don’t put the Cubs in the 2004 World Series, then it just wasn’t meant to be.
But Tribune Co. and the Cubs would be sending the most positive of messages to their fans: We did everything we could.
