This off-season the Cubs have added Derrek Lee and LaTroy Hawkins, two good players. Come October, though, the move Cubs fans will be talking about most will be the move not to sign Ivan Rodriguez.

By trading for Michael Barrett, they virtually eliminated themselves from signing the best catcher in baseball. Rodriguez would boost their offense, but most of all he would work well with a young pitching staff–Carlos Zambrano would be helped the most.

So why is the Cubs’ front office staying away from him? They consider Barrett, a lifetime .253 hitter, their catcher of the future. The Cubs have one year until Kerry Wood is a free agent, and bringing in Pudge may help bring him back.
