Your editorial on the demise of Fannie May correctly noted that the loss of the company should be mourned but was wrong when it said there seems to be no uproar over the closing of the factory and the stores. I think you underestimate the extent of people’s feelings about this.
One need only note that the candy is currently flying off the shelves (as your story did) to realize that people know what a shame this is.
I grew up in Chicago and have fond memories of Fannie May.
My college friends looked forward to the regular care packages sent by my dad, which always included some of the fabulous candy.
My co-workers have come to expect that I will bring them some Fannie May when I return from my frequent trips back home, and they all agree it is the best candy they have ever tasted.
I think the lack of an uproar is not due to indifference but rather is a result of the fact that it is obvious that nothing can be done. Fannie May will be greatly missed.
