Philadelphia, the Eagles have crash-landed. Again.
There will be no trip to the Super Bowl.
Instead, the Eagles and their fans will spend another off-season thinking about what could have been and what never seems to be.
For the third straight year, the Eagles fell one step short of the Super Bowl, and for the second straight year, their West Coast offense went south in an NFC championship game played at home.
Sunday, the Carolina Panthers’ defense forced four turnovers and walked out of Lincoln Financial Field with a 14-3 victory and a ticket to Houston for the Super Bowl. They will play the AFC champion New England Patriots on Feb. 1 at Reliant Stadium.
“Obviously, we’re very disappointed,” coach Andy Reid said. “The guys worked very hard as players and coaches to put ourselves in great position. We overcame a lot of things this year.”
Quarterback Donovan McNabb had his worst game of the season and failed to make it to the finish line, leaving after the third quarter with separated cartilage in his rib cage. He finished 10 for 22 for 100 yards and threw three interceptions.
McNabb was sacked four times, and his passer rating was a career-worst 19.3.
