I read the article in Monday’s RedEye regarding citizen arrests and found it amusing (“Stop in the name of the law,” by Jimmy Greenfield). This morning while I was on the Blue Line heading downtown to work there was a man sitting across from me in a business suit, drinking his coffee and reading the paper. Once he finished both, he put them on the floor and pushed them under the seat.
I was thinking to myself, “What a jerk, leaving his trash on the floor like that.” When you exit the L, there are garbage cans every 2 feet. I wanted so bad to say something to him but didn’t. I couldn’t believe that he couldn’t just walk off the train and throw that stuff out. That got me thinking about yesterday’s article and believe me, I really wanted to make a citizens arrest. Thanks for letting me rant.
Rita’s P.S. Reader Roslyn Smithy adds that she’d like to make an arrest on “people who make U-turns in the middle of the block.” And reader Mariellen McLemore would cuff “people who walk straight out of a building onto the sidewalk without looking or yielding the right of way to pedestrians walking by. That really gets under my skin.”
