Herbert G. Melnick, age 78, of Hanover, IL, formerly of Chicago, born in Chicago on Oct. 26, 1925, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004 at home. Visitation 12 noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004 at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 JFK Rd., Dubuque, IA, 52002. Services 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Full military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League and the Tri-State Vietnam Veterans. Burial Linwood Cemetery. Preceded in death by parents, William and Grace, nee Schiff, Melnick. Survived by wife, Lisa Melnick of Hanover, IL; six children, Elizabeth (Uzi) Avner of Israel, Michael Melnick of Wilmette, IL, Marianne Melnick of San Rafael, CA, Anne (Geoff) Hebert of Verona, WI, Alicia (Kevin) Tyrrell of Glenview, IL and Joseph (Sarah) Pawlak of New Castle of Co.; 10 grandchildren; and a dear friend who was like a son to him, John Baird of Ingleside, IL. Herb married Lisa Armstrong on Dec. 30, 1982 in Evanston, IL. They moved from Chicago to Galena, IL in 1993. Herb was a leader in the field of labor and management relations and organizational development for over 50 years. During this time, he founded several companies including Modern Management Inc. in 1971. Modern Management was the largest and most successful labor relations company in the country. He was a guest on the Phil Donahue Show and other news programs. He was also featured in articles in Forbes Magazine, The Nation, U.S. News and World Report, and the Wall Street Journal. Herb sat on the Board of Directors for the Chicago City Ballet, and most recently, was active in the Galena Rotary. A lifetime Chicago sports fan, he was a limited owner of the Chicago White Sox.
