I wonder if President Bush lives in the same America that I do after hearing his State of the Union address.
I am a 27-year-old college graduate who is unemployed and without health insurance.
I feel no more prosperous than I did a year ago, and certainly less prosperous than I did four years ago when I was employed.
Many of my working-class friends saw an increase of at most $2 in their paychecks due to the tax cut. That’s barely a fast-food meal or the price of a magazine.
Saddam Hussein’s capture makes me feel no more safe. I’m in more danger of getting shot in Chicago than I am of a dirty bomb attack.
America seems to have slipped back into a defensive, reactionary, 1950s Red Scare mentality. But now it’s Arabs instead of Communists. It’s a collective national post traumatic stress disorder, with fear paralyzing us from the the most important parts of our lives: our careers, our families and our health.
