Parents, students and a teacher told the District U-46 Board of Education on Monday their concerns about proposed changes to elementary and middle school boundaries and the closing of two schools.

At issue is a report by a demographer hired by the board to align school facilities and boundaries with population changes and projections.

The board heard concerns Monday about educational stability, continuity and student safety. Several parents said proposed closings and boundary changes could mean their children would move to a new school for the third time in three years.

Shawn Witthof, 10, and his twin sister, Nicole, changed schools once before, moving from Wayne School to Hawk Hollow Elementary School in Bartlett. Now Hawk Hollow is marked for closing.

After talking about the difficulty of adjusting to a new school, Shawn said to the board, “Please do not send me to a new school.”

A public hearing is scheduled for Feb. 24, and the board is expected to adopt boundaries at its meeting March 1.
