The Congress Plaza Hotel has addressed most of the 68 code violations inspectors cited last month, lawyers said in Housing Court on Thursday, but it still must fix plumbing, electrical and architectural deficiencies.
The hotel at 520 S. Michigan Ave. was hit by the city with the citations in December after officials from Local 1 of the Hotel Employees & Restaurant Employees Union reported the alleged defects. Union workers are on strike against the hotel.
Since the complaint was filed last month, “they’re pretty much done” fixing alleged problems that included exposed wiring and accumulated garbage, Assistant Corporation Counsel Judy Frydland said. Other tasks require permits that have not yet been issued, officials said.
Judge Daniel Lynch offered to recuse himself because he said unions have been part of his race for judge, but the hotel did not immediately accept the offer.
