It is unsettling to read about the gruesome slaughter of cows, civet cats, chickens and ducks that are suspected of having contagious diseases. (“Poultry slaughter key in stopping flu,” Jan. 29) Already, mankind habitually kills millions of animals daily to placate our palates. All the cruelty is tyrannical and detrimental to ecology and world hunger. There exists readily available supplies of legumes, grains, vegetables and fruits to feed all the world’s peoples. We can spare the animal kingdom and nourish the planet by ceasing the consumption of flesh-foods.
