An electrical fire at Marshall Field’s in Old Orchard Shopping Center forced an evacuation by flashlight Tuesday evening, officials said.
The fire began about 6 p.m. in an electrical vault in the basement, said Skokie Fire Capt. Ron Moritz.
“There was complete darkness,” Moritz said, “which is why we did the evacuation by flashlight.”
Moritz said no visible damage was found in the store, but the electrical panel was burned through.
Eighteen firefighters responded to the call, but most of the blaze was extinguished by a sprinkler system, Moritz said.
Moritz didn’t know how many customers were in the store but there were more than 200 employees, he said.
