Flight attendant Betty Ong was a brave soul who calmly and competently phoned in crucial information even as her doomed plane veered off course toward the World Trade Towers (“Attendant on jet that hit 1st tower,” Page 1, Jan. 28). In her memory, and in the memory of the thousands of other innocents who died that day, we must give the Sept. 11 commission as much time as it deems necessary to investigate circumstances leading up to the hijackings (“Give time for the Sept. 11 report,” Editorial, Jan. 29).

There is no reason–other than fear of politically unpleasant revelations–for the Bush administration and congressional Republicans to enforce an arbitrary deadline of May 27. If Thomas Keane (a Republican) and his commission say they need more time, they must have more time. Information uncovered by this commission may prove critical to defending our shores in the future.
