A day after flirting with a 59, Ernie Els broke the European Tour record for the lowest 36-hole score.

Els shot a 6-under 66 Friday at the Heineken Classic in Melbourne, Australia, after shooting a career-best 12-under 60 in the opening round. His two-day total of 18-under 126 broke by one shot the previous 36-hole record held by seven players, including Els at the Mercedes German Masters in 1994.

The South African, who had a four-stroke lead over New Zealand’s Michael Campbell after Thursday’s first round, broke the previous Royal Melbourne record of 62 set by New Zealand’s Richard Lee in 2002.

– Matt Kuchar and J.J. Henry, who slipped from view after promising rookie seasons, shot rounds of 7-under 65 for a one-stroke lead in the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
