St. John’s expelled one player and permanently suspended two others Thursday night, hours after a woman was arrested for allegedly lying to police about being raped by several players in Pittsburgh the night before.
After the woman was charged, St. John’s said it had expelled senior Grady Reynolds, who was arrested before last season on charges he pushed a female student against a wall.
University athletics spokesman Dominic Scianna said the school also permanently suspended leading scorer Elijah Ingram, a sophomore, and senior Abraham Keita pending expulsion hearings.
Two other players, freshman Lamont Hamilton and senior Mohammed Diakite, also were suspended, and another player, freshman Tyler Jones, would be disciplined, the school said.
Sherri Ann Urbanek-Bach, 38, of Astoria, N.Y., was charged Thursday night with fictitious reports, attempted extortion and prostitution, hours after she claimed she was raped in a hotel by players she met in a strip club following the Red Storm’s 71-51 loss to Pittsburgh on Wednesday night, Pittsburgh police said.
Wade released
Wisconsin guard Maurice “Boo” Wade was released Thursday from a Madison, Wis., jail on a signature bond a day after his arrest on charges he choked a 19-year-old woman.
Dane County Court Commissioner Todd Meurer ordered Wade to have no contact with the woman as a condition of his release.
Wade, yet to be formally charged, already has been suspended indefinitely by the Badgers. He was held jailed overnight on felony battery charges and missed Wisconsin’s 80-66 win Wednesday over Minnesota.
Bookout surgery
Oklahoma forward Kevin Bookout underwent surgery in Oklahoma City on his right shoulder.
Bookout, a preseason Wooden Award candidate, ended his season two weeks ago after deciding to have the surgery. He severely sprained his shoulder during a practice in October.
Brotherly love
When Yale plays Columbia on Friday night, Joe and James Jones will become the first brothers in more than 40 years to coach against each other in Division I.
The last brothers to coach against each other were Hank and Clarence Iba, who did it in the Missouri Valley Conference from the 1949-50 season through 1959-60. Clarence coached Tulsa and Hank was at Oklahoma State, which was then Oklahoma A&M.
The younger James is in his first year as head coach of the Lions (6-11, 2-2 Ivy League), who went winless in the league last season. Yale (6-11, 1-3) also struggled early this season.
