Hey NFL, boy-banders have feelings too.
The league broke J.C Chasez’s heart when it dumped him from the Pro Bowl halftime show, but now it’s asking him back to sing the national anthem.
Well, the ‘N Sync-er is fighting back. Chasez lashed out at the NFL on Thursday, saying he has been “mistreated” and that he won’t sing the “Star-Spangled Banner” for Sunday’s all-star game in Honolulu.
It all started Super Bowl Sunday when J.C.’s bandmate, Justin Timberlake, exposed Janet Jackson’s nipple shield during the halftime show, making the NFL skittish about J.C. That he was set to perform a song called “Some Girls (Dance With Women)” probably didn’t help.
The league asked him to change his song to “Blowin’ Me Up (With Her Love)”–this is better?–and then asked to change its lyrics.
Chasez reluctantly agreed, but the NFL ended up bagging the whole idea, opting to use hula dancers, drummers, conch shell blowers and local singers from the pre-game show.
Chasez said in a statement: “While I agree the mishap at the Super Bowl was a huge mistake, the NFL’s shallow effort to portray my music as sexually indecent brings to mind another era when innocent artists were smeared with a broad brush by insecure but powerful people. That’s not the America I love. Nor is this the NFL I love.
“I’ll sing the national anthem anytime, anywhere, but not for this NFL.”
