Being a music teacher these days is a bigger job than it seems. It only took 15 minutes talking to my middle-school music class on Monday morning to fully realize the impact of Janet Jackson’s stunt during halftime of the Super Bowl. The night before, I was just as stunned and surprised (and disappointed) as the next person, but Monday was another story. My students simply couldn’t concentrate on the music curriculum at hand until we had fully digested the previous night’s performance.
It took a quiet voice and a lot of thoughtful leading questions before our class decided it was a useless and ultimately unnecessary stunt. Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake are two talented musicians who are making enough money and have enough record sales without tainting the halftime show.
