I would like to respond to a Jan. 29 letter to the editor by Richard Schneider of Wisconsin that said animal rights (anti-fur) activists should “spend some real time, money and effort on dealing with some important issues: child abuse, spousal abuse, drug abuse, hunger.”
First, many of us animal activists are also activists for non-animal victims as well (anti-abortion, anti-war, etc.). Since all violence in our society is connected, it is pertinent to speak out and denounce all violence.
Some wife beaters abuse animals as well.
Serial killers often start off with animal victims.
Second, animal suffering is an important issue.
Whatever we do to eradicate violence benefits humans and animals alike.
If we do not speak for the animals, who will?
