I noticed the Feb. 3 letter to the editor from a woman who was distraught over the large celebration that Oprah Winfrey had to celebrate her 50th.

The letter writer, Donna L. Murphy of Des Plaines, wondered why we don’t recognize the “common” people’s milestones.

I, on the other hand, was very moved by the celebration for Oprah that her friends and family threw for her.

Oprah is incredible and she deserved every ounce of that celebration and the parties that continued all weekend in California.

She has given a tremendous amount back to this city and the world’s children that she deserves to be honored and recognized.

This is not a woman who typically seeks out recognition or fame; she has earned it and continues giving her heart and soul to people everyday.

What an extraordinary woman we have touching the life and spirit of our city everyday.
