Opening and closing with record-tying 150-m.p.h. aces, Andy Roddick beat Jurgen Melzer 6-4, 6-2 Sunday to help the United States wrap up a 5-0 sweep of Austria in the first round of the Davis Cup at Uncasville, Conn.

Robby Ginepri beat Stefan Koubek 7-5, 6-2 in the last match. Sunday’s singles matches were reduced to best-of-three sets because the U.S. had clinched a quarterfinal berth by taking a 3-0 lead Saturday.

In April’s quarterfinals the U.S. will play host to Sweden, which knocked off defending champion Australia 4-1.

– Former French Open champion Thomas Muster will take over as Austria’s Davis Cup captain, replacing Gunter Bresnik, whose contract ends in June.

– Second-seeded Lindsay Davenport needed just 58 minutes to beat Magdalena Maleeva 6-4, 6-1 at Tokyo’s Metropolitan Gymnasium for her second straight Pan Pacific Open title and fourth overall.

– Brian Wilson and Phil Stolt led Illinois to a 4-0 win over UCLA and the Illini’s second straight title in the USTA/ITA National Men’s Team Indoor Championships at Seattle.
