A university appeals committee announced Monday night that it has modified Wisconsin starting guard Maurice “Boo” Wade’s indefinite suspension to two games and that Wade will be immediately eligible to practice and play.
Wade was suspended from the team on Feb. 4 after he was arrested on suspicion that he choked a 19-year-old woman in an off-campus apartment. Wade was held overnight in Dane County Jail on felony battery charges.
Wade did not play in the Badgers’ last two games. Wisconsin (15-4, 6-2) is a half-game behind first-place Michigan State in the Big Ten heading into Wednesday’s game at Iowa.
Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan declined to comment on Wade at his weekly news conference earlier Monday.
Stansbury reprimanded
Mississippi State coach Rick Stansbury was reprimanded by the Southeastern Conference for his tirade against a referee during a win over Mississippi. Stansbury violated the SEC rule prohibiting public criticism of officials and actions that incite fans.
“Any further violation of conference policies of this nature may result in a suspension of coaching duties for one or more games,” SEC Commissioner Mike Slive said.
Stansbury was ejected five minutes into Saturday’s game after his second technical foul. He screamed at referee Karl Hess and, before leaving the court, made a choke sign. Afterward, Stansbury said he did not deserve the second technical.
Moss rejoins Indiana St.
David Moss, Indiana State’s leading scorer, was reinstated to the team while he awaits trial on a charge of misdemeanor battery.
Moss, 20, was suspended Jan. 31 after his arrest for allegedly grabbing his girlfriend by the neck during a fight in her dorm room.
Moss, a sophomore from South Holland, Ill., missed two games. He is expected to play Wednesday against Wichita State.
Banks player of week
Illinois-Chicago guard Cedrick Banks was honored as the Horizon League player of the week. In the Flames’ only game–an 86-82 win over Wisconsin-Milwaukee–Banks scored 20 of his team’s 27 points in the second half.
