Regarding the recent resignation of City Budget Director William Abolt, Mayor Richard M. Daley did everything but recommend this guy for sainthood (“City budget boss Abolt quits; Truck woes claim key Daley aide,” Metro, Feb. 5). He’s great, honest, hard-working, dedicated, etc. Still, Daley took the resignation of this fall guy. (Oops, he’s no fall guy, says the mayor.)
Well, after 53 years here, I’ve learned that if something smells like horse manure it usually is. Sure Abolt is the fall guy. What would you expect, the mayor to do the right thing and resign himself? Why he wasn’t informed, he didn’t know, he had no idea, the nerve of those underlings to keep that bad news from him.
There should be only one resignation, that of the real fall guy, the real person responsible for this mess, the one and only guy who is in charge of everything, the guy who nothing gets past: Richard M. Daley. Daley should do the right thing for the citizens of the city he claims to love so much and resign.
