I want to thank Peter Fitzgerald for his excellent, honorable service as U.S. senator for Illinois; for single handedly standing against special interests in Chicago, Cook County and Illinois; for getting Patrick Fitzgerald confirmed as U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois; and for putting good government above partisan and special-interest politics.
Sen. Fitzgerald is the exception that proves my personal rule that it is nearly impossible for an honest, good government-oriented politician to get elected beyond the local level and continue to be honest and good government-oriented while in office. His reputation for honesty, dedication and integrity places him right next to the late Sen. Paul Simon in my book.
I tend toward a moderate Democratic posture, occasionally voting Independent. If he were to run for re-election for U.S. senator for Illinois as a Republican, I would vote for him. As a matter of fact, I would vote for him no matter what office he ran for and regardless of his party orientation.
Sen. Fitzgerald will be sorely missed.
