Dr. Thomas Patrick Anderson, October 22, 1934 to February 8, 2004. Dr. Anderson was a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. He died Sunday, February 8 of complications from diabetes and hypertension. Born and raised in Chicago, IL by the late C.K. and Anne, nee Moran, Anderson, he attended Loyola Academy before commencing studies at Northwestern University. He graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor’s (1956), Master’s (1958) and Doctoral (1961) degrees, all in Mechanical Engineering. Early in his career, Dr. Anderson taught at Northwestern University in the Department of Mechanical Engineering from 1960 through 1964 as Associate Professor and was promoted to Assistant Professor at Northwestern University in 1964. Dr. Anderson joined the faculty at the University of Iowa in 1966 as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. In 1974, he moved to Washington, D.C. where he was a Program Manager with the National Science Foundation (NSF). In 1978, Dr. Anderson was appointed Dean of Science and Engineering, Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, IL. After fulfilling that appointment, he joined the Industrial and Mechanical Engineering Department at SIUE, where he served as Chairman for six years. He was a member of Who’s Who in America, the Institute of Industrial Engineers, Illinois Professional Engineers, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, American Physical Union, and the National Society of Professional Engineers, among others. He was a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois. He received the 1997 Edward F. Obert Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) for his paper, “Equilibrium Dynamics: An Unconventional View of Some Fundamental Physical Phenomena.” The award is given every two years for the most outstanding paper in Thermodynamics. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Elizabeth, nee Toof; his daughter Patricia, and her husband, James Morreale of Short Hills, NJ, and son James, and his wife Lori, Anderson of Tampa, FL; and five grandchildren. His sister, Mary Hart, resides in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and his brother, Peter Anderson lives in Ridgefield, CT. He was preceded in death by his brother James.
