Not since someone invented the wonderfully ambiguous term “personal trimmer” has there been such a pleasant advance in hardware for unwanted hair.

It’s the Micro Touch from Idea Village Inc., and it is to body forestry what a weed whacker is to a lawn. Shaped like a pen and equally agile, this little machine differs from the crowd with its linear blade.

Rather than the typical round variety, which limits cutting capacity to a small dot at a time, this blade is nearly half an inch wide but mounted sideways on the tiny arm. That means it can go where no man has gone before–excuse us–right up against the interior of a nostril.

This isn’t to say that’s all it’s good for, but it’s so good at it that it’s worth buying for this reason alone.

Nevertheless, we could see some artistic facial-hair design work being done with this baby. We used the tiny comb attachment to thin the mustache quite nicely, thank you.

Beard work became a bit more tedious beyond edge grooming; you wouldn’t attack a whole lawn with that weed whacker, after all.

A couple caveats: There is a learning curve for figuring out the correct angle if shaving all the way to the skin (back of the neck, for example), and the AAA battery must be fresh; if its power is waning, you’ll be tugging, not trimming, and that smarts.

With a suggested price of $10, the Micro Touch is available at Target, Walgreens and Bed, Bath & Beyond, among other major retailers, or phone 800-316-8833.
