The cold case unit of the Cook County state’s attorney’s office has been given $1 million in federal funding to continue investigating and prosecuting some of the area’s oldest and most difficult cases.
U.S. Rep. Phil Crane (R-Ill.) is expected to announce the grant at a news conference Thursday at the Palatine police station.
The cold case unit was instrumental in solving the 1993 Brown’s Chicken massacre in the suburb. Because of the county budget crunch, the unit, made up of eight attorneys and four investigators, was in danger of being scaled back or suspended.
