William R. Murphy, of Park Ridge, age 86, passed away peacefully at his home on Feb. 16, 2004. Bill was born Oct. 4, 1917 to Amelia Reimer and Michael J. Murphy of Chicago, IL. He was preceded in death by Florence, his wife of 56 years, on Jan. 9, 2004. Bill was a proud veteran of WWII where he served with distinction in the Pacific campaign as a tech sergeant in the 132nd Illinois Infantry Regiment of the Americal Division. In the early 1950’s, he founded Courtesy Neon Sales, Inc. of Chicago, which he owned and operated for over 35 years. Many of the outdoor and indoor signs his company sold and installed are still in existence today. Starting as a caddie in the ’20’s, Bill enjoyed the game of golf all his life. He also loved to travel and vacation, always welcomed fine dining, and maintained a life-long determined independence. Pet cats were favored friends since childhood. Surviving family members include his brother, Martin (Marie) Murphy of Prospect Heights; and four children, Maureen (Thomas) Gillette, Cathleen (Thomas) Johnson, William J. Murphy and Bryant (Patricia) Murphy; as well as grandchildren, Sean Murphy and Nicole, Justin, Nathan, Chad and Leslie Johnson; and great-grandkids, Caleb and Lauren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 21, 12:30 p.m. at the Evangelical Free Church, 1330 N. Douglas Ave., Arlington Heights, IL, 847-392-4840.
