This is regarding “Release of Atkins data ignites debate; Doctor’s weight was 258 pounds” (News, Feb. 11). The debate between all-animal and all-plant diets boils down to one issue: sustainability–not sustainability for the individual but sustainability for the planet. Anyone who does even the most rudimentary research into animal agriculture will discover that so many of the world’s precious resources are wasted on animals who, in turn, only produce waste.

As Dr. Robert Atkins’ recent death shows, life is fragile. During the short time that we have here, we must decide what we want our contribution to be: Do we want to tax the Earth’s dwindling resources, exacerbate world hunger and cause untold animal suffering, or make healthful, conscientious decisions that will preserve life?

Both diets work. But losing weight should be about feeling good about yourself. Since I became vegan, I’ve lost 15 pounds and gained a clear conscience. I have never felt better.
