On any given afternoon or evening, Susan Goss might be found preparing her famed wine-braised pot roast for foodies at West Town Tavern. But the morning is hers.
That’s when Goss and other Chicago chefs donate their time to teach cooking and nutrition classes to low-income families.
“I’ve been involved in a lot of fundraisers and support groups [for the hungry] but they are short term,” said Goss, who was honored Jan. 28 at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago’s annual fundraiser for her nearly two decades of work with Share Our Strength, the anti-hunger and anti-poverty organization. “But I wanted to do something for the long term. “
Goss was one of five mentors honored at the gala, which featured food prepared by women chefs.
The other mentors honored were Eva Calderone, a school community representative and parent coordinator at Mozart School; Katie Cimino, a big sister in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago Program; Geraldine Lawhorn, an instructor at the Hadley School for the Blind; and Allison Rosati, news anchor for WMAQ-Ch. 5.
