This is regarding “Pet spending unleashes emotions” (Business, Feb. 15). While $122 may be a bit much to spend on a dog jacket, it is refreshing to know that many people will go to extremes in caring for their companion animals.

On the flip side, far too many people treat animals like unfeeling objects, with little regard for their wants and needs.

Dogs are often chained in people’s back yards with little or no shelter day after day in all weather conditions. Many subsist on scraps and aren’t given any veterinary care whatsoever. All too often, animals are allowed to have litter after litter of puppies or kittens, adding to the millions killed in shelters every year.

Considering the horrific abuse and neglect that we hear about on a daily basis, “pet pampering” isn’t nearly common enough. The caring individuals who treat their animals as part of the family are to be commended.
