Barbara Subject, nee Rutledge, age 79, long time resident of Grayslake, passed away at Sunrise Assisted Living of Gurnee on Tuesday, February 24, 2004. Beloved wife of the late Paul Subject, her husband of 55 years; loving mother of Sandra Hopkins of Palo Alto, CA and David (Victoria) Subject of Naperville, IL; Grandmother of Jared and Rachel Hopkins, Carloyn, Kathryn and Stacey Subject and Michelle (Jaratio) Subject-Tucker; Great Grandmother of Jalen Tucker; Stepsister of Jean Wheeler and Joann Murphy-Galloway. Barbara was born on March 12, 1924 to Sina and Lloyd Rutledge in Adair, IL; she grew up in nearby Macomb. Upon graduating high school in 1942, Barbara moved to Chicago and married Paul Subject on January 18, 1943, 11 days before Paul reported for active duty in the U.S. Air Force. After World War II, the couple lived in Army barracks at Western Illinois University where Paul attended college; in 1950, they moved to Grayslake. During her 52 years in Grayslake, Barbara worked at Lakes News Service while her children were growing up and in 1969, she became manager of the college of Lake County book store when the college opened its doors, a position she held for 17 years. After retiring from the college of Lake County in 1986, Barbara served as a volunteer at Condell Medical Center for over a decade. Accruing a total of 10,418 volunteer hours, she was named volunteer of the year at Condell in 1991 and received the Fred MacKenzie award in 1996, a prestigious award given each year given to a volunteer with over 5 years of volunteer service who epitomizes the spirit of volunteerism. Barbara sang in the choir at the United Protestant Church of Grayslake, was active in the Grayslake Lioness Club, and with her husband, headed the Grayslake Lions Blind Club Bowling League for 15 years. A funeral service will be held Friday, February 27, at 10a.m. at the United Protestant Church of Grayslake, 54 S. Whitney St., Grayslake, IL. Visitation will be from 4-8p.m. on Thursday, February 26 at Strang Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, Ltd., 410 E. Belvidere Rd., Grayslake, IL. From 9a.m.-10a.m. prior to the funeral at the church. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park. After the funeral service, family and friends will be invited to a memorial luncheon at the Country Squire Restaurant in Grayslake.
