I think a constitutional amendment defining marriage would be in violation of the purpose of the Constitution, which is to protect individual rights. It seems that this debate has divided into two camps: one that wants to protect a traditional definition of marriage and one that wants to protect a non-traditional definition of marriage.
As a Libertarian, I ask both sides why they would want government to legitimize any definition of marriage and have to accept the strings attached to government-approved marriage.
Marriage is beyond the scope of proper government and no one definition should be sanctioned by it. When government sanctions anything, it ceases to be an individual right and turns into a collective privilege. Why do we as Americans continue to give this type of power to government to grant us our natural rights as privileges? I thought we the people were above government.
