This is regarding “Barenboim leaving CSO; Music director steps down in ’06” (Page 1, Feb. 20).
The Chicago Symphony has an opportunity of the greatest importance to reconnect with its audience.
Programming in the last years has slighted the 18th and 19th Century masterpieces. Nearly every concert includes a piece of dissonance that Fritz Reiner would not have listened to, let alone conduct.
The danger is real. Apparent pillars of society can rapidly fall when they lose their foundations, as AT&T, the Soviet Union and the World Trade Center have shown us.
Let’s hope that the next music director of the CSO will strengthen the foundations of consonance, putting dissonance to the side.
