I am struck with admiration for the courage of Mayor Richard M. Daley for his statements of support for gay marriage, as reported in “Daley backs gay marriages, but can’t give licenses” (Metro, Feb. 19).

I have long believed in both the sanctity and stabilizing influence of marriage, and see no reason why both these factors cannot be of great benefit to same-sex couples.

Further, of course, there is the issue of discrimination in law against same-sex couples regarding benefits, status and legal standing.

Our nation has no need of constitutional amendments in the areas of marriage and the family.

Our founding fathers knew well that these should be left to the states.

As an attorney, and as a participant in a Roman Catholic marriage for the last 33 years, I applaud Chicago’s mayor.

And I agree wholeheartedly with the thought of legalizing marriage for same-sex couples.
