Richard Loding, 71, of Plainfield, a sports enthusiast and a former Will County chief assessment officer, died Saturday, Feb. 28, of complications from diabetes in Edward Hospital in Naperville. He grew up in Silvis, near Rock Island, and attended Augustana College. Mr. Loding entered Naval Officer Candidate School in 1954 and took his commission in Evans, Ga. He was a Navy supply officer for two carriers and then joined the reserves. Mr. Loding began working for Continental Casualty Co. doing insurance work. He then moved back to Silvis and opened a lumber and construction business with two of his boyhood friends. Mr. Loding was supervisor of assessments for Rock Island for 13 years. In 1977, he began working in Will County as chief assessment officer and served on the review board. “He really knew the ins and outs of government when it came to assessments and tax work,” said his wife, Lucia, whom he married in 1957. He retired in November 2002. Other survivors include a son, Anthony; a daughter, Julie Jodoin; a sister, Janet Ketner; and four grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Beidelman-Kunsch Funeral Home, 516 S. Washington St., Naperville. Mass will be said at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday in St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 1409 Green Trails Drive, Naperville.
