Top seed Andy Roddick needed just two serves to wrap up a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Dutchman John Van Lottum in the Franklin Templeton Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz.
When rain halted play Tuesday night, Roddick led 6-3, 6-5 and was serving at 30-30.
In the second set Tuesday, Roddick was angered by a call by chair umpire Enric Molina. Roddick broke his racket and was penalized a point for delay of game.
– Top-ranked Justine Henin-Hardenne, who has won three of the last four Grand Slams, improved to 15-0 this year by beating Maria Vento-Kabchi of Venezuela 7-5, 6-3 to reach the Qatar Open quarterfinals. Second-seeded Jennifer Capriati defeated Ting Li of China 7-5, 6-1, and sixth-seeded Jelena Dokic lost to 77th-ranked Jie Zheng of China 6-4, 6-1.
