Palos Park officials are urging residents not to leave food outside for stray cats or wild animals, especially during the coyote mating season, which runs roughly through the end of this month.
Doing so teaches coyotes to associate the food with humans and to no longer be afraid of them, said Ray DeVries, commissioner of public works.
DeVries said residents also should not leave their small pets outside because the coyote’s main diet is small animals.
Coyotes are not, however, a danger to children, DeVries said.
