Robert L. Graves, professor at the University of Chicago and long-time resident of Flossmoor, died at age 77 at home on March 2 from complications of pulmonary fibrosis. He was born in Chicago, graduated from Hyde Park High School, Oberlin College, and received a PhD in mathematics from Harvard. He served during World War II in the US Navy. He worked in the engineering research department at the former Standard Oil Company of Indiana and later served for 37 years as a professor and administrator at the Graduate School of Business and in the provost’s office at the University of Chicago. He served on the vestry and taught church school at The Church of St John the Evangelist (Episcopal) in Flossmoor, was active in the Episcopal Church Council at the University of Chicago, and served on the Flossmoor Library Board. Mr. Graves is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara, of Flossmoor; four daughters, Susan, Julia, Christine and Virginia; two grandchildren, Emily and Scott Warren; and a sister, Anne G. Gahn. A Memorial Service and visitation will be held in Flossmoor on Saturday, March 13 at 1:30 p.m. at the Church of St John the Evangelist, 2640 Park Drive, corner of Park Drive and Leavitt Avenue.
