Chicago speedskater Shani Davis, 19, has become the first U.S. man to qualify for a world team in both short- and long-track disciplines in the same season. The only other U.S. skater to do it was Bonnie Blair in 1986 (first in short track; third in the long-track worlds). Davis will compete on relays at the short-track worlds March 19-21 in Sweden. He is scheduled to fly there from the world single-distance long-track championships this week in South Korea, where Davis has qualified in the 1,500, 5,000 and 10,000 meters. Last month he was second in the world all-around long-track championships. Davis, the first African-American skater to win a medal in that meet, wants to be the first to compete in both long- and short-track events in the Olympics.
