Although she taught elementary school for 24 years, Marjorie E. Baker hadn’t been in front of a class since 1962. But one of her first pupils continued to visit occasionally, said her sister Doris Elaine Hintzsche. Miss Baker, 86, died of congestive heart failure Friday, March 5, at her home in Hampshire, where she lived with another sister, Evelyn. She graduated from Hampshire High School in 1935 and in 1937 received a teaching certificate from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. She started teaching in Burlington in 1938. She also taught in Meadowdale Elementary School in Carpentersville and in schools in Marengo and Huntley. She received a bachelor’s degree from NIU in 1952. She retired from teaching 10 years later and for several years worked with her father selling mobile homes in Genoa. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday, with services at 11 a.m., in First United Methodist Church, 207 Grove Ave., Hampshire.
