I watched on TV recently when the foul ball was exploded to try to end the World Series drought.

They exploded the wrong ball.

During the winter of 1943-44, I attended the Commonwealth Edison America Legion Post 118 fathers and sons night and won the grand door prize of a signed ball of 22 Chicago Cubs players, including names like Philip Cavarretta, Clyde McCullough and Leonard Merullo.

For the last 60 years that ball has stayed in the back of my dresser drawer, only brought out to look at occasionally.

I did bring it out and looked at it this year, as the Cubs were finally going to be victorious.

I have thought of myself as a good Cubs fan; but, as I look back now, I can recall going to no more than about five or six games over these many years.

I am really just a long-distance, pseudo fan.

Yes, this is the ball that has jinxed and prevented the Cubs from becoming the World Series champs all these years.
