This is regarding “McDonald’s choices,” by Ken Barun, corporate vice president, McDonald’s Corp. (Voice of the people, March 4). Barun’s letter continues the campaign to portray McDonald’s as a responsible, though misunderstood, corporate citizen.

Barun says, ” . . . the vast majority of medical and scientific experts agree that McDonald’s food can be part of a healthy eating style.”

Surely no reputable nutritionist would agree that eating fatty meat on white bread with fries and soda pop contributes to a healthy lifestyle. Perhaps people are healthy despite their food but not because of it.

McDonald’s would like us to forget that for decades, it spent billions luring in children–and helping form unhealthy eating habits. The company doesn’t miss a trick: clowns, playgrounds, toys and commercials with kid idols.

McDonald’s preaches personal responsibility for consumers but refuses to accept responsibility for its actions.
