Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

For almost 20 years, the revered Japanese collective Ghost has been confounding expectations and delivering miracles with its complex sound worlds. This disc finds the group more expansive, with a crazy quilt of virtuosity and influences that make OutKast seem a colorless monotone. Free jazz morphs into rock, then a trippy cover of Earth Wind and Fire’s “Hazy Paradise,” with mellotron, throbbing bass and ethereal, falsetto vocals from shamanic frontman Masaki Batoh. It has been five years since the last Ghost recording, but this, the group’s best to date, richly rewards the wait.
