After being stepped on for about 70 years, the Rainbow Bridge at Fullersburg Woods Forest Preserve in Oak Brook is finally getting a major overhaul.

DuPage County Forest Preserve District commissioners on Tuesday unanimously approved replacing the wooden decking and rails on the 10-foot-wide bridge, which forms a 90-foot-long arch over Salt Creek and is used frequently by joggers, hikers and equestrians.

District workers will demolish the wooden structure, leaving the concrete and steel foundation.

Contractors’ bids will be solicited for the rebuilding phase, which is expected to cost about $20,000 and take one month.

The new bridge will look like the old one, according to Wayne Miklautsch, district physical plant division manager.

Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, the bridge has suffered damage from rot in recent years and has developed gaps between decking boards that could create tripping hazards, Miklautsch told commissioners last week.
