The story “Doctors flee insurance costs, state” (Page 1, March 12) documents the enormity of the medical malpractice crisis. Many doctors are either retiring from practice or fleeing the state in an effort to avoid the breathtaking malpractice premiums.

Trial lawyers say that the high premiums are due to normal cycles in the insurance industry and they discount the effect of the increasing number and size of claims on the cost of malpractice insurance. Why, then, is the cost of malpractice coverage in states with caps on awards for pain and suffering so much less?

Until I hear a reasonable answer to this question, I will assume that the trial lawyers’ arguments are disingenuous and self-serving.
